Railways bus station is located along Haille Sellasie-Moi
avenue roundabout, next to the Kenya railways Nairobi terminus. The station is
a property of the Kenya railways and is currently used by matatus plying
various routes within and without Nairobi.
Railways bus station has
more users daily as compared to Machakos country bus station, the largest in
Nairobi. This particular morning I was traveling back to Athi-river after a
night out. It was around 6am and there were fewer activities as compared to any
other time of day.
There were more vehicles
than passengers at that time, so the fares had reduced drastically. For
example, I overheard shouts like “Hurlinghum, Yaya 10bob Kawangware 20bob!!”
This struck me a little hard. If only you knew how much it costs an hour away.
Triple the amount.
I was to tell you about
Railways bus station before I deviated. The vehicles were not arranged in any
particular order and I almost thought sanity had returned to our roads. The
touts were hanging on the door of their matatus shouting on top of their voices
the routes their vehicles were plying and no matatu gave way to the other.
The hoots and shouts
were annoying, it’s like trying to sleep after a long day at work and there is
this child, who keeps crying, then the other trying to shut him down by ringing
a bell and the neighbor is playing loud music which vibrates your walls and
windows. You know how it feels.
